Twice exceptional means that your intellectual potential is superior + you have a learning difference or two, like ADHD or a reading or written expression disorder. Adults expect more of you, and they are confused by your struggle to keep track of your assignments and your perfectionism. And so are you, right? Time to learn about your kind of mind. The 2e mind.
The twice-exceptional mind is a creative mind. Hear me out: our world needs you! But you’re often misunderstood. It is vital that you invest yourself in creative work. Keep a trusted mentor in your corner. Someone who encourages you to succeed even while you’re struggling.
American writer Pearl S. Buck said, “The truly creative mind in any field is no more than this: A human creature born abnormally, inhumanly sensitive. To him… a touch is a blow, a sound is a noise, a misfortune is a tragedy, a joy is an ecstasy, a friend is a lover, a lover is a god, and failure is death. (Does this ring true for you?)
Add to this cruelly delicate organism the overpowering necessity to create, create, create — so that the creating of music or poetry or books or buildings or something of meaning, his very breath is cut off from him. He must create, must pour out creation. By some strange, unknown, inward urgency he is not really alive unless he is creating.”
