Parents, are you excited but nervous about high school, wondering if your teen will be able to keep up with the studies and assignments? I have found that most middle school students rely on their teacher’s prompts to get prepared for a quiz or test. Consequently, their study practice involves cramming techniques. Cramming may have worked for your teen in middle school, but high school studies require more preparation on their part.
I’m offering three one-on-one sessions that I know will help the rising freshman and sophomore prepare for a smooth transition into high school. We’ll focus on strengthening the student’s core reading comprehension and writing skills using the school assigned summer reading, breakdown what true study skills look like, and examine how to plan for projects and papers. The goal is to equip the student with academic tools that work.
Please plan to schedule the three sessions over the two-week period between August 5 – 15. Sessions offered on Mondays – Thursdays either at 1 pm or 4 pm. All sessions are virtual Zoom sessions with shared Google docs. I will provide a preparation list earlier in the summer and a shared Google folder full of resources prior to the first session.
Workshop Sessions Include
“Making the Most of Summer Reading” How to make margin notes, keep track of the characters, track the plot, and recognize literary devices and identify themes. |
“Just How Do I Know What to Write? & “Grammar You Gotta’ Know” How to construct a paragraph and an essay by following the basics for evidence-based writing. Learn 4+ key sentence patterns, how to blend quotes, and know where to put those commas and quotation marks using MLA format. |
